Shelter animals encourage education and kindness

Through Jacksonville Humane Society's Pawsitive Reading Education program, children improve their literacy skills, receive take-home books and attend camps and other unique experiences to learn compassion for animals and each other.

"The Jacksonville Humane Society has been a fantastic addition to the enrichment opportunities offered to our youth at Sulzbacher," said Dalton Bradd, Children's Program Coordinator, Sulzbacher. "The opportunity to connect with a dog or cat is not an opportunity all of our children have had, and I know many of them look forward to seeing the animals each week."

"I can do this!"

Learning For Success and its Kids and the Power of Work (KAPOW) program help students apply classroom instruction to their futures in the workplace and in life. Through a series of lessons and interactive field trips, children discover different types of jobs, what it takes to do them, and why "soft skills," such as positive work habits, decision making and communication, are so important.

Learning For Success has expanded since launching KAPOW at one school in 1991. The organization now serves more than 7,000 elementary to high school students through its network of 800 educators and volunteers throughout South Florida.

Lauderhill Paul Turner Elementary students recently explored careers as first responders during their KAPOW field trip to Lauderhill Fire Rescue station with behind-the-scene tours of the station and trucks, interactions with firefighter paramedics and even a fire simulation at the training tower.

Mentoring makes a difference

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Palm Beach and Martin Counties' School to Work program offers insight into post-secondary education and career opportunities through mentoring, employability and life skills training, as well as paid internship experience.

The organization’s “Big of the Year” for 2021, Pat (pictured above right with one of her "littles," Cleondre), has mentored five students in the School to Work program since 2019 with passion, drive and commitment. She embraced virtual tools during the pandemic to ensure her mentees continued championing their individual potential and navigating options for successful futures

"I want to be a pharmaceutical tech and, since she was a pharmacist, she's given me advice on the career path, what states have better options to work in the career, and different colleges and programs," said Cleondre.
