The Jim Moran Foundation Awards Feeding South Florida $50,000 Grant Following Warehouse Fire

Wednesday, October 14, 2009

Deerfield Beach, Fla. In response to a recent fire that destroyed 93,000 pounds of food at the Feeding South Florida (FSF) (formerly Daily Bread Food Bank) warehouse in Broward County, The Jim Moran Foundation announced a $50,000 grant to help reprovision their shelves to meet the immediate needs of hungry families through its partnering agencies.

"Today's decision by The Foundation continues my husband's legacy of compassionate, responsive philanthropy to the ever-changing needs of our community.  With too many children going to bed hungry and too many people not knowing where their next meal will come from, now is the right time to help," said Jan Moran, chairman and president of The Jim Moran Foundation.

Although the warehouse did not suffer any significant damage, toxic fumes and chemicals emitted by the fire destroyed the equivalent of 62,000 meals.  FSF had plans to relocate its Broward warehouse to a larger, more efficient facility in a few weeks.  Following the fire, the move was accelerated to last weekend.

"This generous grant demonstrates The Jim Moran Foundation's level of determination to respond swiftly to the community in times of crisis," said Bruce Berman, president of the Board, Feeding South Florida.  "With this funding and additional support from others who have stepped up to help, we will be able to continue to feed thousands of hungry families in South Florida every day."

Additional donations are needed to continue empowering South Florida non-profits to fight hunger and poverty.  Non-perishable items and dry goods are being accepted at Feeding South Florida's new warehouse, 2501 S.W. 32 Terr. in Pembroke Park, on Mondays through Fridays, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.  Financial donations are also welcome, and may be mailed to the same address.  For every $1 donated, Feeding South Florida can provide six meals.  Every week, FSF distributes 402,739 pounds of food, which translates to 268,493 meals.
