The Jim Moran Foundation Announces Recipient of North Florida African-American Youth Achiever Award

Monday, July 06, 2009

Deerfield Beach, Fla. Wondra Pittman, a Sandalwood High School 2009 graduate from Jacksonville, Fla., has been named this year's North Florida African-American Youth Achiever by The Jim Moran Foundation.  With funding provided through the Jim Moran Institute for Global Entrepreneurship at Florida State University (FSU) (http://www.cob.fsu.edu/jmi/), each year a high school senior who qualifies for financial aid and has applied and received admission to FSU receives a four-year needs-based scholarship.

A well-rounded student who consistently made the honor roll and graduated with an above-4.0 GPA, Wondra has also volunteered with several organizations, such as American Cancer Society, 4-H, and various church groups.  She loves writing poetry and is interested in math, photography, media and communications.  Though undecided on a major, she is determined to obtain a Master's Degree.

Now 18 years of age, Wondra has already faced many difficulties in her young life, including the loss of her mother at age two and her brother at 14.  Using life's obstacles to make her stronger and her supportive family as a source of empowerment, Wondra feels compelled to excel and reach her full potential.  "I believe nothing is too hard to overcome," she said.

"My husband, Jim, knew what it meant to overcome adversity and how important hard work and the right opportunity could mean in a person's life," said Jan Moran, chairman and president of The Jim Moran Foundation.  "He would have been very proud of Wondra's determination and commitment to herself and her future.  She is an extraordinary young woman who inspires hope and promise, and is well deserving of this award."

As the first person in her family with the opportunity to attend college, Wondra is even more driven to succeed.  "I feel like Im not just doing this for myself, but for everyone who didnt have the chance I do," she explained.
