The Jim Moran Foundation Supports Local Food Banks Through United Way of Broward County's Project Lifeline

Tuesday, May 12, 2009

BROWARD COUNTY, FL (May 12, 2009) The Jim Moran Foundation recently contributed $225,000 to local food banks through United Way of Broward Countys Project Lifeline, which will help provide urgent relief to those most affected by the economic downturn. With this gift, United Way of Broward County is now at $625,000 towards the goal of $1,000,000.

In keeping with The Jim Moran Foundations mission of responding to the communitys ever changing needs, its generous gift will be directly invested in the food programs associated with Project Lifeline. The $225,000 will establish and maintain a central coordination system that allows food pantries and food banks to work together buying food in bulk and sharing resources. Project Lifeline began with its first distribution of 2,000 pounds of food on Tuesday, May 12 at 9 am at Cross Road Food Bank.

"Hunger in our community is very real.  However, if we all work together and give generously from our hearts, we can help make sure that no one will go to bed hungry or have to choose between proper nutrition and medication.  The Jim Moran Foundation partnered with United Ways Project Lifeline because it provided us with the opportunity to help make a direct and immediate impact on those who are hungry and hurting in our community," said Chairman and President Jan Moran of The Jim Moran Foundation.   "My husband would have expected his foundation to be responsive and compassionate in its philanthropy.  With this grant, we are honoring his legacy," she continued.

Project Lifeline is a short term initiative focusing on three major areas: increasing the amount of food available at local food banks; helping families from becoming or remaining homeless; and providing information and assistance through 211 First Call for Help to people who are in need of social services information and referral.

"We are incredibly grateful for the generosity and support from The Jim Moran Foundation," said Dr. Jennifer OFlannery Anderson, President & CEO of United Way of Broward County.  "Organizations like this have the ability to set an example to the rest of the community. The Jim Moran Foundation understands the needs of Broward County and has put their faith in United Way of Broward County to help alleviate hunger."

The total funding from Project Lifeline will provide enough food for an additional 240,000 meals per month (three million meals a year) and increase staff to handle a larger workload. This will be administered through Cross Road Food bank.
