Daily Bread Food Bank to Receive up to $100,000 Donation from The Jim Moran Foundation and Community Match Challenge Grant
Funds Will Establish New Food Program Benefiting 173 Broward Nonprofits

Thursday, June 05, 2008

Deerfield Beach, Fla. Prompted by the current economic crisis, more families are in need of help to meet their most basic needs.  In response, The Jim Moran Foundation (TJMF) today announced it will present the Daily Bread Food Bank (Daily Bread) with $50,000 to provide immediate aid to Broward residents struggling to put food on their tables.  It will also match up to $25,000 donated by community members, bringing the potential contribution to $100,000.  The funds will establish a "Purchased Food Program" in Broward County to supplement necessary protein products, which are not often donated, to 173 active nonprofits that feed thousands of local families in need each year.  An official announcement will be made at JM Family Enterprises, Inc.'s (JM Family) volunteer food sorting event for Daily Bread on Saturday, June 7, 8 a.m., at JM Family headquarters in Deerfield Beach (100 Jim Moran Boulevard).

"With gas and food prices increasing every day, more and more South Floridians are turning to food banks to help feed their families," said Jan Moran, chairman and president, The Jim Moran Foundation.  "My husband established his Foundation to respond to the ever-changing needs of our community.  With this grant, we are continuing Jim's extraordinary legacy of giving back."

The potential $100,000 donation will fund the Purchased Food Program in Broward for one year providing nutritional meals for more than 50,000 disadvantaged residents.  Daily Bread has received funding for the program in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties, but never before in Broward.

Local 10 News' Care Force will collect and track donations for the community match challenge grant from June 9 - 14.  Local businesses and residents are encouraged to contribute by sending a check payable to "Daily Bread Food Bank" to Local 10 News, Attn: Care Force, 3900 Biscayne Blvd., Miami, FL 33137.

"These are challenging times," said Susan Hantman, president, Board of Directors, Daily Bread Food Bank.  "Families who have never requested help before are now struggling to put food on their table.  We sincerely appreciate The Jim Moran Foundation's generous donation and its efforts to encourage further community support."

The check presentation will kick-off a pre-arranged food sorting event at JM Family from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. - Daily Bread's largest volunteer effort in South Florida.  More than 300 JM Family associates and their families will work in teams to sort 100,000 pounds of food collected during the National Association of Letter Carriers food drive.  Volunteers working for five hours will cut six weeks off the time it would take Daily Bread staff to sort, process and package the donations for distribution.

DIRECTIONS TO SATURDAY'S EVENT:
Take I-95 to Hillsboro Blvd. West.  Travel one block west and turn north (right) onto Jim Moran Blvd.  Event will be held in the parking lot on the right.
