The Jim Moran Foundation Awards College Scholarship 2007 North Florida African-American Youth Achiever Award Presented

Monday, July 30, 2007

Deerfield Beach, Fla.- Jan Moran, chairman and president of The Jim Moran Foundation (The Foundation), has announced the recipient of the 2007 North Florida African-American Youth Achiever Award. Shanita Shack, 18, a recent graduate and dance major at Jacksonville, Florida's Douglas Anderson School of the Arts is this year's winner. The Award is a needs-based, four-year scholarship to Florida State University (FSU) available only to high school seniors who qualify for financial aid and who have been accepted for admission to FSU.

Shack ranked 15th in her class and plans to enroll in FSU's honors program this fall. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Society of High School Scholars. She has been recognized by Who's Who Among American High School Students, the Sigma Pi Phi fraternity for high academic achievement and as a National Ventures Scholar. Additionally, she completed nearly 200 hours of community service volunteering with seniors and children in Jacksonville.

Although passionate about her dance talent, Shack recognizes it as a hobby and stays focused on her aspirations of majoring in biological science with plans of becoming a veterinarian. With this ambition in mind she attended the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine at Villanova University and has participated in the Points of Light Youth Leadership Institute. When asked where her motivation and inspiration originate, she credits her strong family ties.

"My parents and I maintain a close relationship, and they have always stressed the importance of doing well in school and achieving a higher education. Their continued guidance drives me to do my best," Shack said. "My father is a strong mentor and his encouragement and my determination keep me focused on my goals."

Shack's ambitions also include giving back to her high school alma mater by returning as a positive role model and sharing her talents and success story. She would also like to continue working with children.

"Shanita's achievements prove that with a lot of hard work and determination, great things are possible. I admire her sense of purpose and commitment to family and community," said Moran.
