The Jim Moran Foundation Award Presented to Bob and Myra Weaver

Thursday, December 01, 2005

Bob Weaver, far right, and his wife Myra, second from right, are all smiles as they accept a $25,000 check designated to FYO and a bronze sculpture presented to them by Jim and Jan Moran as the 2005 recipients of The Jim Moran Foundation Award.

Deerfield Beach, Fla. - South Florida broadcasting pioneer Bob Weaver, and his wife, Myra, received The Jim Moran Foundation Award for 2005 for their lifetime of active service and personal commitment to meeting the needs of the South Florida community. The award, an engraved bronze sculpture, was presented by the organization's Founder and Honorary Chairman of JM Family Enterprises, Inc., Jim Moran, and his wife, Jan Moran, chairman and president of The Jim Moran Foundation (The Foundation).

"Bob and Myra started something special for young people, and words are inadequate to describe the impact these caring people have had on so many families," said Jim Moran. "I give them thanks, from the bottom of my heart, for giving their support and friendship whenever they see an area of need."

Community leaders, friends, family and co-workers celebrated the Weavers' honor during a ceremony held at The Foundation in Deerfield Beach. Bob Weaver gained local and national acclaim as "Weaver the Weatherman" during his 50-year broadcasting career with South Florida's WTVJ-TV. Weaver also earned a reputation as a celebrity who would make appearances at local charity functions at the asking.

Both he and Myra are dedicated to giving back to the community. Inspired by musically gifted children in South Florida, they helped found the Florida Youth Orchestra (FYO) in 1988 and continue to lead the organization as president (Bob) and executive director (Myra). The Hollywood, Florida-based organization, which currently has 300 members representing nationalities that span the globe, provides musical education for youth ages six to 19 in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach Counties. The Weavers received a $25,000 non-restricted grant as part of their award from The Foundation, that they designated to FYO.

FYO's S.T.E.P.S. (Symphonic Training and Education Program for students) provides instrumental training and music appreciation to at-risk youth in grades two through five, at public schools, faith-based organizations and Kids in Distress -- all at no cost to families or the school system. Its Generations program brings young performers together with senior adults, creating a bridge of beautiful music across the ages.

"This is a wonderful day for the Florida Youth Orchestra," said Weaver. "I've been in the TV business for more than 50 years, and this is one of the nicest things that have ever happened to me. Jim and Jan Moran are examples of people who are making a difference for the greater good," he added.
