BSO School Resource Deputy Victor Thompson Receives The Jim Moran Foundation Award and $25,000 Grant to Charity

Deerfield Beach, Fla.--For his unwavering dedication to offer learning and life skills opportunities for youth in underserved neighborhoods, Deputy Victor Thompson from the Broward Sheriff's Office was named the 2010 recipient of The Jim Moran Foundation Award.

With this honor, he received a handcrafted award created by South Florida artist George Gadson a bronze sculpture of an open book with a child climbing a ladder supported by an outstretched hand and an unrestricted $25,000 grant to the nonprofit of his choice. Deputy Thompson designated the funds to the Prestige Club of Southwest Broward, which provides awareness and fundraising assistance to charities helping disadvantaged children.

As a School Resource Deputy at Collins and Dania elementary schools, he goes above and beyond the call of duty to motivate and encourage students. Deputy Thompson recently approached The Jim Moran Foundation to sponsor reading and mentoring initiatives. He also established a program that provides clothes and basic school supplies to those without other resources.

"If there is anyone who embodies the true spirit of The Jim Moran Foundation, it's Deputy Thompson and I know my husband would have been very proud to honor him for his good work," said Jan Moran, chairman and president, The Jim Moran Foundation. "As a community, we are indebted to him and all of the other School Resource Deputies who serve as such positive role models for our children."

Jim Moran established this annual award in 2003 to recognize those who have a history of giving back to their community through active service and personal commitment. The individual must exemplify the characteristics of the mission of The Foundation, reflect proven accomplishments that address real community needs and/or concerns and inspire others to embrace civic and charitable responsibility in meeting the needs of their community.

"Basketball coaching legend John Wooden once said, 'Do not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do.' These are words that I strive to live by every day," said Deputy Victor Thompson. "If everyone would just help one person, what a different world this would be."
